Bestinvest publishes ‘Premier Selection’ of funds and investment trusts to aid DIY-investors13 August 2013
Bestinvest, a leading provider of services for DIY-investors, has today published the latest edition of its Premier Selection. The guide provides information on the investments rated highly by Bestinvest’s large research team.
While a number of brokers publish lists of funds that investors might consider buying, these are often restricted to commission paying funds and do not include investment trusts, even though these often delivered superior returns. However, Bestinvest has long-research rated investment trusts and investment companies, with 79 of these currently featured in the Premier Selection alongside 122 open-ended funds.
Bestinvest uses a star-rating system running from one-star (poor) through to five-stars (exceptional). The Premier Selection includes all funds rated three-stars (high quality) or more, so investors can see the strength of conviction Bestinvest has in a particular fund.
Investments are selected on a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative factors, with the starting point being analysis of the career track records of individual managers across the firms they have worked at and performance attribution analysis to see what factors have contributed to outperformance and how consistent this has been.
Bestinvest’s analysts will then look at factors such as risk management, investment style, resourcing issues, potential capacity constraints and how well the manager’s interests are aligned with those of investors. The team typically undertakes over 400 face to face meetings a year as part of its quest for those funds which they believe will deliver long-term value for investors after the impact of costs.
Jason Hollands, Managing Director of Bestinvest, commented: “With well over 2,000 funds available on our Select platform alone, plus investment trusts, ETFs and stocks and shares, we find that our large number of DIY investors value access to our research and guidance tools to navigate the maze and once invested to monitor and manage their portfolios.
It is a fact that most fund managers disappoint over the long-term so in researching investments it is important to start with a wide universe, which should include investment trusts and not just open-ended funds - but then to be super-selective. Given the size of the universe, the hurdles are high to get on the Premier Selection, especially for those investments with a coveted five-star rating. In selecting investments, you shouldn’t just rely on backward looking data such as past performance or historic volatility, an assessment of forward looking prospects is absolutely key in our view. And of course, once invested it is essential to monitor you portfolio as even former star funds need to be reassessed when factors such as manager change or substantial growth in assets occurs.”
